QCP’s First Short Story Contest Winners

Below are the winners of Quarter Castle Publishing’s first Short Story Contest. The deadline for submissions was September 31, 2014.

The prizes are as followed:

1st Place: $50

2nd Place: $40

3rd Place: $25

Also, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners receive two (2) copies of the Quarter Castle Chronicles in which their story appears.

PLUS: Ten (10) additional stories that capture our interest will appear in the first Quarter Castle Chronicles. Each author will receive two (2) copies of the anthology in which their story appears.

First, second and third place winners will be interviewed by Quarter Castle Publishing and appear on its website.

Chapter TwoShadows in the Stone - Diane Lynn McGyver

Alaura awoke to movement within the sheep stall. In the dim light she saw Isla staring in the direction of Aruam Castle. She turned and looked in the same direction as the child but found nothing unusual.

Isla slipped between the stall rails and entered the dwelling. Frequent wandering convinced Alaura the time to rescue the child had to be soon, before she went missing. She couldn’t keep the child safe if she strayed from the yard in her absence.

A crash inside the dwelling startled Alaura. The once-dark interior exploded with light, but she couldn’t see the source of the noise.

“Where is it?”

She heard a deep voice; it didn’t sound like Keiron Ruckle. After several loud bangs, another voice echoed on the night air.

“Maybe he already has it.”

“Darnacles!” The first voice growled.

“Maybe it’s outside.”

Alaura froze as a large human flung the back door open. Two more men followed him outside. All three brandished swords and wore chainmail armour over rugged clothing of The Trail. They searched the backyard.

“This’ll show Keiron how we deal with traitors!”

Introducing OpenDyslexic Font

In the fall of 2013, Quarter Castle Publishing introduced their first books featuring OpenDyslexic font: City of Light and Shadow by Sheila McDougall and Nova Scotia – Life Near Water by Diane Lynn McGyver. 2014 will see additional titles—including books for children—appear as we test-drive this innovative font geared towards helping those with reading disorders read easier.

OpenDyslexic is a font created by Abelardo Gonzalez to increase readability for readers with dyslexia. It is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License. To learn more about this special font or to download it for free, visit the website.

Quarter Castle Publishing is dedicated to meeting the demands of readers. One way we’re doing this is by creating a selection of material using the special typeface OpenDyslexic. We hope it will make reading easier and more enjoyable for individuals who have developmental reading disorder (DRD or Dyslexia).

Musquodoboit Craft (and book) Sale

Quarter Castle Publishing is ready for the weekend and the Christmas Festival of Crafts. The event takes place Saturday December 7th (10:00 am to 4:00 pm) and Sunday December 8th (11:00 am to 4:00 pm) at the Musquodoboit Valley Education Centre, 12046  Highway 224, Middle Musquodoboit, Nova Scotia.
